REGARDING NANCY HARMS:

Ellington At Night
Ellington At Night

Born and raised in Minnesota, Harms relocated to New York City in 2010. She has toured Europe multiple times since 2011, taking her to France, England, Norway, Italy, The Netherlands and Denmark. Nancy’s NYC appearances have included her own shows at BIRDLAND, SMALLS JAZZ CLUB, THE KITANO, and 55 BAR. Her recent Manhattan appearance in the famed METROPOLITAN ROOM in which she premiered her brand new show entitled “ELLINGTON AT NIGHT” was reviewed by Stephen Holden in the NEW YORK TIMES, who described her as “…[an] enigmatic woman of mystery forging her own path”. In addition to her own CDs “DREAMS IN APARTMENTS”, “IN THE INDIGO”, and “ELLINGTON AT NIGHT”, she appears on WYCLIFFE GORDON’S disc “HELLO POPS” and on JEREMY SISKIND’S releases “FINGER-SONGWRITER” and “HOUSEWARMING”. Nan- cy appeared in the 2014 PITTSBURGH JAZZLIVE FESTIVAL and headlined a stage at the 2015 COPENHAGEN JAZZ FESTIVAL and the 2016 Festival de jazz de Québec. One of her self-penned tunes from the “Dreams In Apartments” album (“Weight Of The World”) placed 3rd in Popjazzradio.com’s international listener poll of top jazz tunes of 2014 with over a million votes.

Nancy’s latest recording, “Ellington At Night” received a four-star review in DOWN- BEAT Magazine (“Harms is an original…a truly special voice and style…. A fresh ap- proach to a stimulating 12-track program of mostly Ellington compositions.”) and the CD Release concert for this disc sold out two shows at legendary “Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola” in NYC’s Lincoln Center. “Ellington At Night”, has been her most successful album yet, surpassing her earlier recorded efforts in sales and airplay, breaking into the American radio Jazz Weekly charts, and ultimately earning a special distribution deal with Gaya Productions in France for nation-wide promotion and distribution. The album, as well as her accompanying “Ellington at Night” concert performances, have earned her excel- lent reviews including those from the NY Times, Downbeat, New York Jazz Record, and others. Nancy has now celebrated her “Ellington at Night” CD release (in addition to the prestigious “Dizzy’s” at Lincoln Center in NYC) with performances at Hollywood’s “E- Spot Lounge”, the “Elgar Room” in England’s famous Royal Albert Hall, and top Paris jazz venue “New Morning”.“…

(Harms) suddenly lets her power loose on key phrases that display a reserve of swing- ing authority… A tough, demanding swinger emerged in up-tempo numbers… Ms. Harms revealed the determination of a strong, independent woman who knows what she wants… The final impression left by Ms. Harms was of a complicated enigmatic woman of mystery forging her own path.” Stephen Holden, NEW YORK TIMES

“She engages the listener by seeming to put her whole soul completely forward and yet, somehow, hold something back at the same time. She’s the kind of singer who, after hear- ing her just once, you’ll never want to let her go.” Will Friedwald, WALL STREET JOURNAL

“Harms is an original….a truly special voice and style… She could – and should – go a long way.” -Bob Protzman, DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE

“Harms’s voice has the power to light cigarettes and then make them smolder all night long.” – -Dave Sumner, eMUSIC

“…As the program moved forward, the Minnesotan-born, New York-seasoned singer com- pletely won over the French audience with her sultry voice, flawless swing, crystal phras- ing, glamorous looks, magnetic stage presence and beautiful timeless repertoire.” -Pascal Sabattier, JAZZTIMES

“…Harms, as throughout, straddles the line between classical and contemporary jazz sen- sibilities, offering a new take on a beloved piece of Ellingtonia that retains its emotional core.” –JAZZIZ MAGAZINE

“Harms skillfully lures us into the wistful dreamscape of a haunted lover leaning ever- forward, eyes fixed on her audience to convey the very essence of the lyric.” -Billie Roe, BROADWAY WORLD
